Drill Details

Holds the drill's steps, skills, equipment and other details.

Example A drill's name, version, skills and where you have used it.
Three man weave v2 12 min · USA Hockey ADM
passing breakouts 10U
Used In Breakout basics v3 · Practice, Oct 6 Older
Type
Drill, Game or Individual Skill. A game's steps read Rules on its page, its print and its plan blocks. An individual skill is a drill one player does alone. An individual skill becomes a Drill block in a plan.
Default Minutes
The drill's usual length. Adding the drill to a plan copies this value into the block.
Purpose
The goal of the drill.
Setup
How to set up the ice for the drill, one item per line. Each line gets a number automatically.
Steps
The drill's steps in order, each a numbered row. Press Enter to add a step. Press Shift+Enter for a new line inside a step. Click in a step to show its grip and ×. Drag the grip to move the step. Click the ×, then click Remove Step.
Rules
Shows in place of Steps on a game. Each rule is a row of its own.
Coaching Points
What to watch for during the drill, each point a row. The rows move and remove as Steps rows do.
Variations
Other ways to run the same drill, each variation a row. The rows move and remove as Steps rows do. The drill's print sheet and share link list the variations. A plan's print sheet does not show variations.
Skills
The skills the drill covers. Type a skill to select from the skills already in use. Search and season planner coverage both use these skills.
Age Groups
The age groups the drill suits. Use these to filter the library.
Ice Size
The ice the drill fits, from Full Ice down to Neutral Zone. Click every size that works. A drill with exactly one size gives a plan block that blank rink. Use these to filter the library.
Situations
The players on each side, attackers first, such as 2v1 or 3v2. Typing 2 v 1 or 2on1 saves 2v1. A drill may list several situations. An individual skill shows no Situations.
Goalies
How many goalies are in net. None means the drill runs with no goalie. Not Set means the drill does not say. The library's With Goalies and No Goalies filters skip a drill with Not Set.
Equipment
The equipment the drill needs on the ice. Adding the drill to a plan copies this list into the block.
Source
Where the drill came from.
ButtonWhat the Button Does
Edit Drill Opens the drill's fields to change. A coach who may edit the drill sees the drill this way first.
View Drill Shows the drill to read, with no fields. Text you typed stays until you click Edit Drill and Save. A coach who may not edit the drill sees only this view.
Save Changes the current version in place. ⌘S or Ctrl+S does the same.
Update Current Version Changes the current version in place, as Save does. Opens from Ways to Save, the arrow beside Save.
Save New Version Saves your changes as the next version. Opens from Ways to Save.

Player Markers

A step, a rule or a coaching point can name players as a drill diagram does. Each name reads as a player marker.

What You TypeWhat the Step Shows
X, or X with a number such as X1 A solid square, for the X team.
O, or O with a number such as O2 A ring, for the O team.
F, D or G, alone or with a number A gray square, for a forward, a defense or a goalie.
Up to three letters or numbers in single quotes, such as '1' or 'C' A round marker without the quotes.

A marker shows in the plan, on the share pages and on every print sheet.

The box you type in keeps the plain letters.

A lowercase letter stays a word. A number without quotes stays a number, as in 2 pucks. An X between two numbers stays a times sign, as in 3 X 3.

Drill Buttons

The buttons at the top of a drill page act on the whole drill.

Add to Practice or Plan
Lists your upcoming practices and library plans under the header. See Used In.
Print
Opens the drill sheet. See Printing a Plan or a Drill.
Duplicate
Copies the drill as a new library drill with its files. The copy starts at version 1.
Export File
Downloads the drill as a Coach Binder file. See Sending a File.
Export
Shows in place of Export File when you have other workspaces. Opens Export File and Copy To. See Sharing Drills and Plans. The drill's link has its own panel. See Drill Share Links.
Archive
Takes the drill out of the library after you confirm. Plans keep their copies.
Restore
Appears on an archived drill. Returns the drill to the library.
More
On a phone, holds Add to Practice or Plan, Print, Duplicate, Export File, Copy To and Archive in one menu.

The copy's name ends in (copy). Plans, progressions and the share link stay with the original drill.

A role with Drill Library at Edit sees Duplicate. An archived drill has no Duplicate.

Same Name appears under the header when other drills share this drill's name.

  • Each number opens one of those drills. The minutes follow the number.
  • The drills share a name only. They are not versions of one drill or a progression.

Media Library

Lists the photos, PDF pages, videos, links and DrillBoard diagrams on the drill.

Add Media in the panel's band shows the ways to add a file. Click Add Media again to hide them.

Videos
YouTube and Vimeo links play on the page. A video you add plays on the page too.
Adding a file
Click Add Media, select File Media, then click Add Files. Choose a photo, a PDF or a video.
Several files
Choose or drop up to 10 files at once. Every file attaches, and the first photo opens. A file dropped on the library shows Add Media.
Adding a video
A video may be 100 MB, about one minute. For a longer video, select Link and paste its link.
Adding a PDF page
Choose the PDF in Add Files. Then click the page that shows the drill.
Converting
A new video shows Converting for about a minute. Then the video plays. If a video shows Video did not convert, click Remove.
On a plan
A drill's video plays in the planner and on a shared plan. The detailed plan sheet says how many clips are in Coach Binder.
No Sound
Open the video and click No Sound. The drill keeps a copy with no sound. The page, Download and a shared plan all play that copy.
With Sound
Plays the video with its sound again. The drill keeps the sound you removed.
Loop
Open the video and click Loop. The video plays again from the start each time it ends. This applies in the planner, on the viewer page and on a shared plan.
Play Once
Stops the repeat. The video plays once, then stops.
Links
Coach Binder stores each link exactly as typed. Coach Binder never fetches the link.
What can print
A photo, a PDF page or a DrillBoard diagram. A link or a video never prints.
The main picture
The first file that can print. The main picture fills the plan sheet's picture box and prints first on the detailed plan. Move another picture first to change the main picture.

The files keep the order you give them. Every picture prints in that order.

Moving a file
Click Move Earlier or Move Later under the file. On a desk, hold the dots before its name and drag.
On a shared plan
A shared plan shows the block's own files first. The drill's files come after, in this order.
On paper
The pictures print in this order. The first fills the plan sheet's picture box.
New files
A file you add goes to the end.

A caption names a file in a few words.

Writing a caption
Open the file. Type the words in Caption, then click Save Caption.
Where it shows
On the file's tile, on a shared plan and under the picture on the detailed plan and the pictures pages.
Practice sheet
A practice sheet row's small picture box has no room for a caption.
Before a caption
The tile shows the file's name as uploaded. That name never prints and never reaches a shared plan.
Removing a caption
Clear Caption and click Save Caption. The tile then names the kind of file, such as Photo.

Click a photo, a PDF page or a video to open it. The file opens at full width under its row. A video plays there.

A photo opens with a toolbar across its top. Every tool is on that one line.

Close
Shuts the open file. Clicking the file again does the same.
Open Full Size
Opens the file on a page of its own. A phone can zoom the picture there. Click Back to return.
Download
Shows on that page. Saves the file to your computer or phone. A PDF page saves its whole PDF. A video link has nothing to save.
Save to Photos
Shows in place of Download on a phone, for a photo or a video. Opens the share sheet. Tap Save Image or Save Video to keep it in Photos.
Redrawn
Shows a straightened photo of a Coach Binder rink as the rink drawn fresh. Your pen and pencil marks sit on the fresh rink in their own colors. The paper, the shadows and the printed rink drop away. The drill prints this version too.
Cleaned Up
Shows a photo of paper as a clear drawing on white. The cleaned version has no shadows and no tint from the light. Each pen keeps its color. The drill prints this version too.
Faint lines
A rink's printed markings and light pencil stay gray. A Black and White print shows them in light gray, as a blank rink prints its lines. Ink of every color prints black.
Contrast
Sets how dark the gray lines of a Cleaned Up photo show. Slide toward Stronger to make them darker. Slide toward Softer to keep them light.
Faint Lines
Sets how much light marking a Cleaned Up photo keeps. Slide toward Keep to hold a light pencil line. Slide toward Fade to turn shadows, smudges and printed rink markings white.
Faint Lines on Redrawn
Sets how much of your drawing Redrawn picks up. Slide toward Keep when light strokes, dashes or lines across the markings go missing. Slide toward Fade when specks of paper grain show. Contrast belongs to Cleaned Up only.
Reset
Puts Contrast and Faint Lines back at the middle. The middle is how every cleaned photo starts.
Original
Shows and prints the photo as taken. Click Original when the cleaned version loses part of the drawing.
Color
Shows the photo on screen in its own colors. Every photo starts at Color.
Black and White
Shows the photo on screen in grays. It works with Redrawn, Cleaned Up and Original. A Black and White print looks the same with either choice. A Color print shows the photo as the screen shows it.
Save Edits
Saves every change to the photo at once. The drill then shows, prints and shares the edited photo.
Cancel
Drops the photo changes you have not saved.

The tools change nothing until you click Save Edits. Each tool shows a preview in the photo first.

Closing a photo with unsaved changes opens a question. Click Discard Edits to drop them. Click Keep Editing to go back.

Redrawn, Cleaned Up, Original and the sliders never change the photo you added. Change them at any time.

Redrawn shows only on a rink photo shown Straightened. Click Whole Photo and the photo shows as taken. Click Straightened to bring Redrawn back.

What comes across
Every mark darker than the paper on open ice. On a printed line, only a mark darker than the line.
What drops away
The paper, the light, the camera grain and the printed rink. Marks on the boards drop too.
A mark that drops away
Click Cleaned Up to see the whole photo of the drawing again.

A crop trims a photo to the drawing. The drill shows, prints and shares the cropped photo.

A photo you add opens in the crop frame as soon as it uploads. The Add Files box shows the upload until then.

  1. Click the photo to open it bigger.
  2. Click Crop. A frame appears over the whole photo.
  3. Drag a corner of the frame, or drag inside the frame to move it. With the keyboard, tab to a corner and press the arrow keys. Hold Shift for bigger steps.

Keep Whole
Stands in place of Cancel on a photo with no crop yet. Closes the frame and keeps the whole photo.
A crop never changes the photo you added. Click Crop, then Reset, to go back to the whole photo.

Reprocess Photos prepares a drill's photos again with the newest processing. The button is in the Media Library band.

Reprocess Photos
Makes the picture on screen and the print again for every photo on the drill. Each photo keeps its Cleaned Up or Original choice, its sliders and its crop. The photos you added never change.
Never checked
A photo added before the drawing check gets the check. A drawing on paper starts at Cleaned Up.
Older rink photos
A photo of a drawn Coach Binder rink added before straightening comes out straightened. Each more drawn rink on the sheet is added as its own picture. A cropped photo stays whole.

A photo of a printed Coach Binder rink comes in straightened and cut to the rink.

PhotoComes In As
One drawn rink The rink alone, squared up
A rink sheet with several drawn rinks One picture for each drawn rink, in sheet order
A rink sheet with nothing drawn The whole photo

Straightened
Shows and prints the rink alone. A new photo of a drawn rink starts at Straightened.
Whole Photo
Shows and prints the photo as taken. Click Whole Photo when the rink came out wrong.
  • Print rinks from the Drills page. Click Print, then Blank Rinks.
  • A plan sheet's empty rinks work the same way.
  • Photograph the whole rink. Keep all of its boards in the photo.
  • A photo taken at an angle comes out square.
Straightened and Whole Photo never change the photo you added. A switch takes the crop off.

Straighten squares up any photo from four corners you place. Use it for a page shot at an angle, or a rink that came out wrong.

  1. Click the photo to open it bigger.
  2. Click Straighten. Four corners appear over the whole photo.
  3. Drag each corner onto a corner of the page. On a rink photo, drag each corner until the outline sits on the rink's boards. With the keyboard, tab to a corner and press the arrow keys.
  4. Slide Lens toward Bow Out when straight lines bulge outward. Slide toward Bow In when they bend inward.
  5. Click Done. The photo shows squared up.
  6. Click Save Edits.
Lens
Undoes the bend a phone camera puts in straight lines. The middle changes nothing.
Rink
Names the rink in the photo. Pick its size and an outline of its boards follows the corners. No Rink squares up a page.
Reset
Takes your corners, the Lens and a picked rink off. A rink photo goes back to its saved rink.
Cancel
Closes the corners and keeps the photo as it was.
Rink photos
Keep the rink's own shape. The outline goes on the rink's boards, not on the page.

Rink brings Redrawn to a rink photo that came in without it. A photo cut close to the boards often does.

  1. Click Straighten.
  2. Pick the rink's size under Rink. An outline of its boards appears on the corners.
  3. Drag each corner until the outline sits on the rink's boards.
  4. Click Done. The photo shows Redrawn.
  5. Click Save Edits.
Straighten never changes the photo you added. Click Whole Photo to see the photo as taken.

Rotate Left, Rotate Right and Flip turn a photo that came in sideways or mirrored.

Rotate Left
Turns the photo a quarter turn to the left.
Rotate Right
Turns the photo a quarter turn to the right.
Flip
Mirrors the photo left to right. Click Flip again to undo it.
Crop
A crop turns and flips with the photo. It keeps framing the same part.
Rotate and Flip never change the photo you added. The drill shows, prints and shares the turned photo after you click Save Edits.

Text puts your words on the photo. Each label prints as dark words on a white box.

  1. Click Text.
  2. Type the words, pick Small, Medium or Large, then click Add Text.
  3. Drag the label to its place. With the keyboard, tab to a label and press the arrow keys.

New Text
Lets go of the picked label, so the words make a new label.
Crop and Rotate
Leave each label where it sits on the photo. Drag a label again after a crop.
Text never changes the photo you added. The drill shows, prints and shares the labels after you click Save Edits.

No cover
The card shows the picture that prints first.
Other files
The card steps through every file with a picture, after the cover, in the order of the files.
The cover never changes what prints. A link to a web page has no picture, so it is never a cover.

ColumnWhat the Column Shows
Version The version number. Current marks the version the drill is at now.
Saved The day the version was saved.
By The coach who saved the version.

Drills and Blocks

A block is one part of a practice plan, such as a drill or a water break. A block with a chosen drill copies the drill's name and minutes. The block keeps a link back to the drill.

  • Renaming a drill leaves the old name on the blocks that used the drill.
  • The link lets a block show the drill's diagram and open its page.
  • Renaming the block breaks the link. The block keeps the name and minutes it copied.

On an event's Plan tab, a block from the drill library keeps the drill's fields locked.

Unlink and Edit
Unlinks the block from the drill. A band asks first. The drill's skills, equipment, words and media open to edit in this plan. The saved drill does not change.
Lock to Saved Drill
Puts back the saved drill's fields. A band asks first when this plan changed them.
Unlink It
Clicking the name of a library drill asks to unlink it first. Click Unlink It to unlink the block and rename it.
Relink
Shows after a rename or an unlink. Puts back the drill's name and its link.
